Northern Eye – Townsville: March 2024
Regional Economic Advisory and Urban Planning North have teamed with Townsville Chamber to release the March edition of the Northern Eye, this quarter taking a deep dive into the Townsville market from an economics and planning perspective.
Townsville and the broader national economy appear to be at tipping point, with higher operating and borrowing costs catching up to the post-COVID growth period.
Townsville will not escape the 2024/25 downturn unscathed with significant economic links to world trade and commodity markets, with several major economies already in recession. However, it remains well-positioned for long-term growth. Keys to unlocking this growth include economically viable higher density housing options and catching the lagging perception up to the reality of Townsville as a top regional destination to live, work and invest after the difficult social and economic years leading up to COVID.
This issue looks at the Townsville Economic Outlook and Labour Market, and explores opportunity around Gentle Density, the current buzzword in urban planning.

BD Mag: Meeting the Need for Regional Economic Insights – November 16, 2023
Regional Economic Advisory was featured in BD Mag discussing our offering in the regional marketplace.
In the article, Matt discusses the ongoing regional growth and the need for focused regional economic insights, despite disruption in the macroeconomy and broader consulting industry.
“We have invested in the databases and benchmarking to be able to turn around analysis quickly, but we also have the industry experience and relationships on the ground to make sure that our recommendations are robust and stand up to scrutiny. We stand behind our analysis and dig deeper than can be done with an off-the-shelf product, but we keep our overheads lean to meet the budget needs of a regional client base. Everybody needs to be ‘on the tools’ so to speak (especially me!), it’s important that the people that make the decisions are on the ground and in touch with the community.”
